The fight against cigarettes smuggling enters, today, a new phase after the Customs Directorate General signs a cooperation agreement with the three largest tobacco companies in Romania, JTI, BAT și PMI.

Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean condemned the beheading of a French citizen in Algeria

The Romanian Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean categorically condemned the beheading of a French citizen in Algeria by a group affiliated to the Islamic State. Mr Corlatean expressed shock and outrage at what he called "a new act of unimaginable cruelty", and said that those who committed such acts must answer in front of the law. The high official reaffirmed Romania’s strong commitment to contribute to the international community's efforts to fight international terrorism and ISIL phenomenon.

Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs repatriated a group of Romanian citizens from Syria

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it had repatriated a group of 22 Romanian citizens from Syria, using the aid of the Romania’s Embassy in Beirut. Since the onset of the conflict in Syria, the Romania's Embassy in Damascus repatriated, with is own procedures, almost 600 Romanian citizens. The Ministry in Bucharest stated that it would continue actions to assist and support the Romanian citizens left on Syrian territory, including their evacuation and repatriation.

Cluj Napoca is preparing to become European Cultural Capital in 2021

The Romanian city of Cluj Napoca is preparing to become the European Cultural Capital in 2021. Representatives of local NGOs have set up the priorities for the accession to this status, and they will try to convince the representatives of the European Commission that the city deserves the European Cultural Capital title. The team in Cluj has already established the visual identity of the city, the slogan and the concept of submitting the application. The slogan is "East of West, Servus 2021". Experts believe that the city of Cluj Napoca has maximum chances to become the cultural capital of Europe due to the fact that the most important evaluation activities will take place next year, exactly when the city has the title of European Youth Capital.
