PMP leader Elena Udrea files candidacy for Romania's presidency

Another presidential hopeful has filed her candidacy for Romania's presidency at the country's Central Electoral Bureau on Monday: Elena Udrea, the leader of the Popular Movement Party (PMP). An electoral platform known as a "Project for a Beautiful Romania" is supposed to ensure the country's chance on its way to democracy and growth after 25 years of expectations, Ms. Udrea said as quoted by RADIO ROMANIA. She also promised that unfinished plans of Romanian President Traian Băsescu would go further in 10 years time as she was commited to finalise his projects. More than 400,000 people have signed in support of Ms. Udrea including President Traian Băsescu. Other confirmed presidential candidates include Prime Minister Victor Ponta of the governing Social Democratic Party (PSD), Klaus Iohannis, the leader of the opposition National Liberal Party (PNL), MEP Monica Macovei as independent candidate, and Călin Popescu Tăriceanu, the leader of the Liberal Reform Party (PLR). Other presidential candidates are expected to file their candidacies including Kelemen Hunor, leader of the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), and Dan Diaconescu of the DDPP (Dan Diaconescu People's Party).

Presidential candidates contested

Romania's Constitutional Court received new petitions contesting candidacies to the country's presidential elections on Monday. There were two complaints against candidacies of Prime Minister Victor Ponta and MEP Monica Macovei, court officials told RADIO ROMANIA. A verdict is expected on Tuesday around 3 PM. Two complaints against Prime Minister Victor Ponta were already rejected by the Constitutional Court.

Under scrutiny: Romania's justice reform and fight against corruption

Experts of the European Commission are expected to assess the progress made by Romania in its efforts aimed at ensuring reform of its legal system and the country's fight against corruption in compliance with EU's Machanism of Co-operation and Verification (MCV). Starting on Monday, the visit of the EU delegation is expected to include meetings with representatives of every institution in the area. As RADIO ROMANIA reported, an MCV report is expected early next year.

Head of Romanian Boxing Federation involved in a DNA enquiry

The head of Romania's Boxing Federation have attended hearings before the country's National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) on Monday. Leonard Doroftei had to answer questions concerning a boxing match in July 2011 in the capital Bucharest starring Lucian Bute. "We had to answer questions concerning our current dealings and the so-called Bute Gala. We also had to talk about alleged mismanagement by my predecessor Rudel Obreja", Mr. Doroftei told RADIO ROMANIA.
