PSD National Council designated Victor Ponta as candidate for Romania’s Presidency

The National Council of the Social Democrat Party (PSD) designated, yesterday, unanimously, the party leader, Victor Ponta, as candidate for Presidency of Romania. The candidature for the November elections will to be validated by the PSD Congress scheduled in the first half of September. PSD President Victor Ponta, delivered in his speech, the message of change, after ten years of contradictory situations on the Romanian political scene. President of Romania should be the President of all Romanians, the Social Democrat leader said. Victor Ponta said he wanted a new model of a President, useful for the society and to act as a mediator.

Romania has won a gold medal and three silver ones at the International Chemistry Olympiad

Romania has won a gold medal and three silver ones at the 46th International Chemistry Olympiad, held in Vietnam - the Ministry of National Education informs. The result is one of the best, at team level. The Gold Medal was awarded to Maria Andreea Filip, a student in the 12th grade at the International Informatics High School of Bucharest. This year edition has been attended by nearly 300 competitors from 77 countries.

The underground economy, equivalent to almost a third of GDP

The underground economy in Romania amounted to 28.4 percent of GDP in 2013, according to estimates by the European Commission, quoted in a report by the Council of Europe. Thus, the underground economy in 2011 corresponded to losses of 40 billion euro, the amount remaining constant in 2013, too, given the increase of GDP.

Collaboration between Romanian and Dutch police to combat theft in Amsterdam

A team of police officers from Bucharest arrives, this weekend, in Amsterdam. For four days, they will work with the Dutch police forces, under a bilateral protocol signed last year. The Romanian and Dutch police officers will try to identify those who might commit offences during street events taking place in Amsterdam.

Inspectors from the U.S. and Romania perform an observation flight over Russia and Belarus

Romanian and American inspectors carry out during July 28th -August 1st , an observation flight over the territory of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, by a Romanian aircraft An-30, in accordance with the Treaty for Open Skies - Sergey Ryzhkov, Director of the National Center for reducing the nuclear threat said for ITAR-TASS.
