A mayor before Romania's DNA

The mayor of the Romanian north-eastern town of Piatra Neamț appeard before Romania's National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) for hearings on Monday. Piatra Neamț city mayor Gheorghe Ștefan was expected to explain his alleged involvement in a file concerning a complaint by the People's Party - Dan Diaconescu (PP-DD) against Laura Georgescu, the current head of the country's National Audiovisual Council (CNA). Mr. Ștefan told RADIO ROMANIA he was a witness in a case also involving Viorel Hrebenciuc, a deputy of the governing Social Democratic Party (PSD), other CNA officials and Ms. Georgescu herself. The hearings come after PP-DD president Simona Man and Liliana Mincă, a PP-DD MP, accused Laura Georgescu of alleged involvement in a corruption case while calling for her resignation.

Health care contribution not expected to rise, Health Minister says

Romania's Health Minister dismissed rumours about an expected rise in health care contributions in 2015. The issue was not subject to alleged talks between the ministry and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or other international institutions, Health Minister Nicolae Bănicioiu said in a statement issued on Monday. The Romanian government was not expected to debate the issue, the minister pointed out. Mr. Bănicioiu dismissed previous remarks made by State Secretary Dorel Sandesc early on Monday claiming that health care contribution would go back at 14 percent - a figure similar to levels in 2008.

Protests of Ukraine's Romanian ethnic minority

Ethnic Romanians in Ukraine call on country's President Petro Poroshenko to withdraw the conscription of youths in northern Bukovine which led to mass protests on routes in the Romanian northern province of Suceava, Moldovan capital Kishinev and Ukraine's capital Kiev. Protesters burned their military writs issued by Ukrainian authorities following the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Some 500 youths (girls included) in northern Bukovine and the Ukrainian region of Hertza received such documents as parents called on President Poroshenko to give up the move, RADIO ROMANIA reported.

Orange Code warnings extended

An Orange Code warning of heavy rains and rough winds was extended until Monday at 3:00 PM, RADIO ROMANIA reported. The Romanian south-western counties of Gorj, Vâlcea, Mehedinți, Dolj and Argeș are most affected by torrential rains with waters of more than 80l/m² in some areas. The Yellow Code is still on for the south-western provinces of Oltenia, Banat, south-western Transylvania, north-eastern Muntenia and the north-western region of Crișana.
