Romanian court verdict delayed

A Bucharest court has delayed until August 13 its verdict in the so-called "Lottery One" file involving businessman George Copos. Mr. Copos received a firm four-year prison term for tax evasion following a Bucharest Sector 2 court ruling in January 2013, RADIO ROMANIA reported on Wednesday. Along with other four defendants involved in the case, George Copos was also expected to pay damages of RON 4 million to ANAF, the country's National Agency of Fiscal Administration. Mr. Copos was sent to court in 2006 for tax evasion and an alleged fraud of more than 1 million euros following tradings with the Romanian Lottery National Company.

Romanian Senator Ioan Ghișe turns independent

Romanian Senator Ioan Ghișe may turn independent after leaving Romania's opposition right-wing National Liberal Party (PNL). Mr. Ghișe made the announcement on Wednesday when he said he would run as an independent candidate in the upcoming presidential elections in November. A presindent should act as a mediator between the civil society and public authorities, Mr. Ghișe told RADIO ROMANIA. "I will run for Romania's presidency as an independent candidate in order to restore Romanians' confidence in their vote. It is their vote that ensures the political power", he said.

Eight Romanians dead following a car crash in south-eastern Spain

Eight Romanian nationals died on Tuesday following a car crash in the Spanish south-eastern province of Alicante, RADIO ROMANIA reported. Their van was hit by a truck and then burst into flames. Three women, three men and two children died while the van driver was seriously injured following the crash. Tests showed the driver was not under drug or alcohol influence. Romania's Foreign Ministry believed that a ninth person could be among the victims though the body was still to be found.

Bucharest Police chief released from job

The head of Romanian Police in the capital Bucharest was dismissed while other police officers and two police agents are under investigation following the release by mistake of Adrian Botez, an interloper who was supposed to serve a ten-year jail sentence for attempted murder. Police chief Mihai Pruteanu was actually given a notice following the incident but he asked to be released from the job, RADIO ROMANIA reported. Mr. Pruteanu currently served as deputy chief of the Public Order Directorate of the Romanian Police. During the night between June 30 and July 1, a court notice confirmed the jail sentence against Adrian Botez was final. However, the police chose to release the defendant who was currently still at large.
