Romanian President Traian Băsescu calls for a review of current local administration law

Romanian President Traian Băsescu called on parliament to review a current local administration law which saw no conflict of interests in local officials being at the same time members in managing boards of utilities. The adoption of the law is inappropriate as long as the country's National Integrity Agency (ANI - Romania's anti-corruption watchdog) expects to see its powers restricted, Mr. Băsescu said in the document on Monday. The new law is also inconsistent with recommendations made in a report of the EU Co-operation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) while questioning the impartiality and objectivity of mayors and local council chiefs and allowing conflicts of interest, the presidential document said as quoted by RADIO ROMANIA.
