Fate of UNPR MP Titi Holban still under question

By ten votes for, nine against and two abstentions the Legal Affairs Committee in Romania's House of Deputies (the parliament's lower house) has rejected on Monday a request of the country's justice minister concerning the preventive arrest of Titi Holban, a representative of the governing National Union for the Progress of Romania (UNPR). Mr. Holban claimed his innocence at a recent committee hearing, RADIO ROMANIA reported. But it is the House of Deputies who is expected to decide by vote his preventive arrest. Titi Holban is under enquiry for his alleged involvement in an influence peddling case which resulted in a 10,000 euro bribe allowing a company to escape sanctions of an Anti-fraud Regional Directorate.

Former Mehedinți county chief remains in custody

A former head of the Mehedinți County Council in south-western Romania remains in custody, an appeals court in the capital Bucharest ruled on Monday. However, the ruling is not final as it may be subject to appeal before the country's Supreme Court, RADIO ROMANIA reported. Prosecutors with Romania's National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) have called for the preventive arrest of former Mehedinți chief Adrian Duicu, a member of the governing Social Democratic Party (PSD), for his alleged involvement in a corruption-related case.

Alleged PM's involvement in Mehedinți county chief corruption case prompts resign call

As former Mehedinți county chief Adrian Duicu remains under preventive arrest, the opposition People's Movement Party (Mișcarea Populară - PMP) called for the resignation of Romania's Prime Minister Victor Ponta until a court would establish his alleged role in the Duicu case. "What we are seeing now is that Mr. Victor Ponta has been involved in the influence peddling case of Mr. Duicu acoording to DNA files. And the news came only a few days after Mr. Ponta signed a declaration calling for the resignation of President Traian Băsescu for crimes he did not commit", PMP leader Elena Udrea told RADIO ROMANIA on Monday.

Romanian regions under yellow code of stormy weather

Heavy rains are coming back in some Romanian regions, RADIO ROMANIA reported on Monday. A yellow code of heavy rains and winds was issued in eastern Romania for Monday evening at 8 PM which was expected to end on Tuesday at 9 AM. Heavy rains would ultimately move to central and north-western Romania on Tuesday with a yellow code starting at 9 AM until 9 PM in the evening as rainfalls of more than 50 litres per square meter were expected.
