Romanian Government approves draft law on social security tax cuts

Romania's government approved a draft law aimed at cutting by 5 percent social security contributions paid by employers starting from October 1, RADIO ROMANIA reported. The document is due in Parliament for further debate in order to get an emergency approval. In March, Romanian Finance Minister Ioana Petrescu told a Budget Committee that the move would reduce tax evasion as she hoped the cut could be introduced by July. The IMF has agreed to postpone its review of Romania's stand-by agreement until November allowing the country to develop its fiscal policies.

Simple motion of Romanian Liberals and Democrat-Liberals

58 representatives of the opposition National Liberal Party (PNL) and Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L) in Romania's Senate put forward a simple motion claiming that "Ponta Cabinet was unable to write by dictation". The motion is expected to come under debate next month, Puiu Hașotti, the leader of the PNL group in the Senate, said as quoted by RADIO ROMANIA. However, the date of the debate was still to be decided in six days, said Ioan Chelaru, a Senator of the governing Social Democratic Party (PSD), who was chairing the session on Wednesday.

Romanians' opinion on immigration

Some 38% of Romanians have an open attitude towards immigration while 54% expressed no opinion on foreigners coming to Romania, according to an Immigrants Integration Barometer of Soros' Open Society Foundation in partnership with the Romanian Association of Health Promotion issued on Wednesday. However, Romanian local authorities had no integration strategies while immigrant figures were unavailable, project manager Victoria Cojocariu said in a statement as quoted by RADIO ROMANIA on Wednesday. At the same time, education along with ways of collecting and centralising data on non-EU foreigners remain a key issue, the Barometer said.

Romanian MEP Mircea Diaconu contested

Romania's National Integrity Agency (ANI) called on the European Parliament to withdraw the MEP mandate of Mircea Diaconu, an actor and former member of the opposition National Liberal Party (PNL) who ran as an independent candidate in the European elections in May. An ANI complaint to Bucharest Appeal Court on Wednesday called on the country's Central Election Bureau (BEC) to suspend the mandate of Mircea Diaconu. A former senator also acting as chief manager of the Nottara Theatre in the capital Bucharest, Mr. Diaconu was found incompatible for the job by ANI who now claimed that a previous court verdict on the matter was irrevocable.
