"Romania has no international obligation of allowing territorial autonomy on ethnic criteria"

"Romania has no international obligation of allowing territorial autonomy on ethnic criteria" - this was the Romanian government's answer to a request put forward by the Székely National Council. The answer comes after the Székely National Council (CNS) presented the prefecture in the Romanian central county of Mureș with a manifesto concerning the autonomy of the so-called Székely Land on March 10 after ceremonies commemorating the death of Székely heroes in county capital Târgu Mureș. CNS president Izsak Balazs said he called on the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) to express its position on the issue. "We believe that many things in the government's answer fail to abide by its international law commitments. However, we should carefully consider the government's response. This is why we looked for advicee from UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor as we expected to take his answers into account when wording our position", Mr. Izsak said as quoted by RADIO ROMANIA on Thursday.
