Final results in Romania's European elections

Here are the final results of the European elections in Romania as made public by Marian Muhuleț, spokesman of the country's Central Election Bureau (BEC) on Thursday: the alliance of the governing Social Democratic Party (PSD) - National Union for the Progress of Romania (UNPR) - Conservative Party (PC) - 2,093,234 votes (16 mandates); the opposition National Liberal Party (PNL) - 835,531 votes (6 mandates); the opposition Liberal Democratic Party (PD-L) - 680,853 votes (5 mandates); independent candidate Mircea Diaconu - 379,582 votes (1 mandate); the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) - 350,689 votes (2 mandates), and the opposition People's Movement party - 680,853 votes (2 mandates). Other political parties, groups and independent candidates in the race have failed to reach the 5 percent margin allowing them to become members of the European Parliament, RADIO ROMANIA reported.

Military and religious celebrations on Romania's Memorial Day

Christians around the world are celebrating the Ascention on Thursday also called Ispas in Romania according to the country's old traditions. But Romanians are expected to pay their respects to their heroes as the country is also observing its Memorial Day. Military ceremonies and religious services are expected in places where Romania's heroes fought wars defending their country. Participants will include both active and retired servicemen along with war veterans and officials representing local auhtorities. "Our country has gone through a lot of harships with huge losses as people died on war frontlines in Romania and other countries as well. All these people gave their lives for the country and they deserved all our respect and gratitude for making our life in Romania a dream come true", retired Counter Adm. Petre Zamfir told RADIO ROMANIA.

Head of Cluj County Council detained

Romania's anti-corruption prosecutors have detained a high ranking official in the Romanian Transylvanian county of Cluj on Wednesday. Horea Uioreanu, head of the Cluj County Council, is expected to appear in court on Thursday when prosecutors will call for a preventive arrest warrant on his name, RADIO ROMANIA reported. Anticorruption prosecutors have filed five accusations against Mr. Uioreanu including bribery, forged documents under private signature, and money laundring. Vasile Pogăceanu, a businessman in the village of Iclod, was also arrested for his involvement in Mr. Uioreanu's case as he was expected to face similar accusations.

Protests in the Romanian Black Sea port of Constantza

Some 1,000 people raised protests in front of the City Hall building in the Romanian Black Sea port of Constantza on Thursday against a decision aimed at transfering 13 percent of the Constantza port shares to the city's local council which would exclude the country's Transport Ministry as majority shareholder. The protesters fear they would lose their jobs due to higher port duties and tariffs. The port's trade unionists launched general strike threats in case the government refused a review of the decision, RADIO ROMANIA reported.
