Six Canadian CF-18 fighter jets arrived at the 71 Air Base in the Romanian Transylvanian town of Câmpia Turzii on Wednesday. The planes are expected to stay in Romania for five month while Canadian troops would attend a joint training exercise with Romanian pilots. Training exercises are organised following recent crisis in Ukraine, a country sharing a long border with Romania. Operations in Câmpia Turzii are part of a NATO strategy designed to reiterate its support of East European countries formerly part of the Soviet Communist block. "NATO is always supporting its partners, and our partners here should be sure of that", Canadian Commander Yves Blondin said as quoted by RADIO ROMANIA on Thursday
Romanian police expected to fight tax evasion in baking industryRomanian police in the capital Bucharest is expected to raid bakeries and headquarters of 40 baking companies on Thursday. Trucks carrying grains and bakery products are also subject to checks as a number of checkpoints are already in place at the gates of the city, a Bucharest Police spokesman told RADIO ROMANIA. The police action is aimed at preventing and fighting tax evasion in the country's baking industry more than six month after the government decided a 9 percent VAT cut in the field.
Romanian judge under preventive arrestJudge Stan Mustață and court clerk Mariana Curea remain under preventive arrest according to a final verdict issued by Romania's High Court of Cassation and Justice on Thursday. Formerly working with the Bucharest Appeal Court, the defendants are accused of bribe and influence peddling. Mr. Mustață was allegedly taking bribe from people involved in criminal cases in order to get suspended sentences. As RADIO ROMANIA reports, Stan Mustață presided a trial of the country's Food Research Institute also involving media tycoon Dan Voiculescu. He also heard an appeal by Mihai Stoica, former manager of Steaua Football Club, against the verdict in the case of football transfers.
