Orange Code warnings for eight counties in southern Romania

Romanian authorities are on alert as hours of heavy rains may result in renewed floods across the country. Orange Code warnings were issued at 9AM on Thursday for rivers in eight southern Romanian counties, RADIO ROMANIA reported. According to sources of the country's Natioanal Hydrology and River Management Institute (INHGA), renewed floods are expected in the Romanian southern counties of Mehedinți, Dolj, Gorj, Olt, Argeș, Teleorman, Dâmbovița and Giurgiu. "Dams are the only solution in order to prevent floods and people are advised to build their homes far from areas alongside rivers", Ana-Maria Agiu, spokeswoman of the Romanian Waters Institute said in a statement.

Romanian tennis champ Ilie Năstase to run for Senate seat

Romanian tennis champion Ilie Năstase and Laurențiu Mihai are expected to run for a Senate seat in the by-elections organised in the fourth district of the capital Bucharest. Both Mr. Năstase and Mr. Mihai are running for the governing coalition including the Social Democratic Party (PSD), National Union for the Progress of Romania (UNPR) and the Conservative Party (PC). The right wing Conservative Party officially announced the candidacies following a meeting on Wednesday, RADIO ROMANIA reported. The by-elections for parliamentary seats in both chambers are also expected in other Romanian counties on May 25 when Romanians will also elect their representatives in the European Parliament.

Romanian musician Romeo Vanica dies at 69

Romeo Vanica, former editor with the Radio România Actualități channel of the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation (SRR), died on Wednesday at 69 in the capital Bucharest. A former member of the hugely acclaimed Mondial group in the 70s, Mr. Vanica was also known as a gifted composer with famous songs such as "Echoless Romance", "Spring", "If Wind Would Come to You". He is survived by Romeo Vanica Jr., also a musician. Funerals are expected at Mărcuța Cemetery in Bucharest at 2PM, RADIO ROMANIA reported.
