Gas crisis not expected to affect Romania, PM Victor Ponta says

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta expects Romania to survive a potential gas crisis in the short term while pointing out that more investments are needed in the future in order to ensure a growth of domestic supplies. "Romania's dependence on Russia is rather low as only some 25 percent of gas is imported. After a friendly winter, we have the necessary suplies for a longer period of time. In case of a crisis of weeks or months, there is no imminent danger for our people and industry. However, in case such crisis persists, then it is absolutely necessary for Romania to extend its current capacities", Mr. Ponta said as quoted by RADIO ROMANIA on Friday.

French carmaker Renault is not expected to extend production in Romania

French carmaker Renault is not expected to extend its production in Romania due to high costs and poor infrastructure. Additional supplies will go to Renault's Moroccan branch where costs are lower, Constantin Stroe, vicepresident of Renault's Dacia plant in the Romanian town of Pitești said in a statement on Friday. "Production at Dacia plant is not supposed to be extended in the context of its current location. Therefore, the Moroccan branch is expected to cover additional supplies", Mr. Stroe added as quoted by RADIO ROMANIA. The Dacia official pointed out the need of a modern infrastructure expected to support the carmaking sector which was providing some 200,000 jobs in the field.

Criminal gang dismantled by Prahova police

More than 57 tons of fish and fish products of more than RON 1 milion were seized following raids by police in the Romanian county of Prahova. Police swooped on eight homes in county capital Ploiești, RADIO ROMANIA reported. The police action led to the annihilation of a criminal gang specialised in tax evasion and illegal trade with fish products. Six people were detained for questioning at the headquarters of the Prahova County Police in Ploiești. The suspects are expected to answer questions about their illegal tradings between April 2013 - April 2014.

Romania's DNA chief receives the International Women of Courage Award

The head of Romania's National Anticorruption Directrate (DNA) received the International Women of Courage Award at a ceremony in the capital Bucarest on Thursday. Laura Codruța Kövesi was declared the winner of the presitigious American prize for 2014. Establisehd in 2007 by the US State Department, the prize goes to women around the world who have shown leadership and courage while leading their countries' efforts of reform and development, US acting Chargé d'Affaires Duane Butcher said as quoted by RADIO ROMANIA.
