US Navy destroyer USS onald Cook is dispatched to the Black Sea waters as the US is trying to calm down its eastern European allies about alleged Russian operations along their borders with Ukraine. The guided missile destroyer is expected to conduct exercises and a series of Black Sea visits. The warship left the Spanish port of Rota wile a Pentagon spokesman confirmed the move was aimed at "reassuring US allies of our commitment to the region". Six countries are on the Black Sea including Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and Georgia, RADIO ROMANIA reported.
Constantza mayor still under investigation but freeRadu Mazăre, the controversial mayor of the Romanian Black Sea port of Constantza, was released from jail on Wednesday though he remained under investigation for his alleged involvement in a corruption-related case. The court rejected a request by Romania's National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) pleading for a 30-day arrest warrant on his name. However, the court ruling is not final and it could be subject to an appeal, RADIO ROMANIA reported. The court issued a similar ruling in the case of businessman Avraham Morgenstern who was also under investgation for alleged bribe. DNA prosecutors claim that Mr. Mazăre received a bribe of 170000 euros from Mr. Morgenstern in exchange of support for a bid concerning the construction of the Henri Coandă social campus in the city.
Police raids in northern MoldovaMore than 120 police were involved in raids on ten homes in Hârlău and Ciurea, two communities in the north-eastern Romanian province of Moldova. The homes' owners are suspected of tax evasion and money laundring. Some six businesses are involved in the case for their relations with other 35 companies. As RADIO ROMANIA reported, 13 suspects are involved in the case which resulted in an estimated loss of RON 3 million for the Romanian state.
Open Doors Day at Romania's GendarmerieAn Open Doors Day is organised by te Romanian Gendarmerie Thursday starting fro 10 AM (local time). More than 2,500 schoolchildren are expected to visit eadquarters and facilities f the Romanian Geandarmerie Generale Inspectorate, Vlad Țepeș Special Intervention Squads and a number of training locations. This is the third year when the Romanian Gendarmerie joins the "Know More, Improve Yourself" national programme of the country's Education Ministry, RADIO ROMANIA reported.
