President Traian Basescu will send letters to MPs regarding the new excise tax on fuel

The Romanian President Traian Basescu will send a letter to each member of the Romanian Parliament, in which he will be asked not to approve the new excise tax on fuel, introduced by the Government on April 1st . This morning he has sent a similar letter to the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Valeriu Zgonea. Before leaving for Buxelles, where he will attend the Summit of the European Union - Africa, Mr Bǎsescu has argued his opposing the 7 cents excise tax on fuel.

A team of experts from the European Commission assesses the progress made by Romania in the field of justice

A team of experts from the European Commission are assessing, these days, in Bucharest, Romania's progress in the areas of judicial reform and the fight against corruption under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism. For three days, they have had meetings and discussions with representatives of the main institutions of the judiciary, and members of the Parliament. The independence of judiciary, the constitutional reform or the implementation of the new codes of criminal matters have been among the main topics tackled. The current assessment mission, that continues until tomorrow, contributes to the preparation of the report on justice within CVM which will be released later this year or early 2015.

The Romanian researchers are participating with over 30 inventions in the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva. The event starts today. Romania has a long tradition of participation in this exhibition. Last year the Grand Prix was won by a company from Romania for system scanning planes. Geneva exhibition is the most prestigious global event in the field of inventions.

Rosia Montana Gold Corporation will lay off most employees

The vast majority of employees at Rosia Montana Gold Corporation will be fired, according to an official announcement made by the company's management. Mayor of Rosia Montana said that several other small companies that provided various services for the company announced plans to lay off staff. Currently, the few people who are working in the community, are most of them employees at the Town Hall and in schools. The Mayor added that tourism was not bringing, yet, significant revenue, and logging in the area was no longer a viable alternative, because there were no large areas of forest to be exploited.
